What is wired glass?

  Wired glass is rolled, polished, and annealed glass with a layer of wire embedded in the center.

  Historically, wired glass has been used in locations where a secure "look" is desired, such as jewelry showcases and museum displays. It was also used in skylights to prevent broken glass from falling into a room or onto the sidewalk if broken. Wired glass is growing in popularity, in part because it can be cut to size from stock panels in the field with tools commonly used for glass cutting. The primary use of wired glass has been in areas where fire-resistant building materials are needed.

Why is wired glass fireproof?

  When wired glass is exposed to fire, the annealed glass breaks as it reaches temperatures of approximately 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit. When the glass breaks, metal wires in the glass hold it in place within the frame.

  As the fire and glass temperatures rise, the glass rapidly softens and heals the cracks, all held together by the wires. Once the cracks have "healed," the wired glass will prevent the passage of flames, smoke, and hot gases for approximately 45 minutes in NFPA 252 fire door and NFPA 257 fire window fire tests.

  It is also important to note that most fire-rated materials (except those used in 20-minute fire-rated doors) are tested with a stream of water after exposure to the fire test. This is known as the hose stream test and is designed to test the structural integrity of fire rated products after exposure to fire. The test simulates the product being struck by water from a fire hose.

 Application:they are used frequently in balcony panels, hallway doors even as decorative glass for table tops and cabinet doors when an industrial look is required. The cast wire glass is obscured so it also can provide privacy as well as safety where is needed.
